BEIRUT — The Ukrainian Embassy in Lebanon on Wednesday told the Lebanese Education Ministry that Ukraine had approved giving 100 Lebanese University students scholarships to study in Ukraine, the state-run National News Agency reported.

Here’s what we know:

    • According to the NNA, the Ukrainian embassy said that his country “excused” Lebanon from giving a reciprocal offer because of the “humble abilities that the Lebanese state has.”

    • For his part, Lebanese caretaker Education Minister Abbas Halabi asked the Ukrainian Ambassador “that the Ukrainian universities work on facilitating for Lebanese students the continuation of their studies in areas that are calm,” the NNA reported. Around 1,000 Lebanese students fled Ukraine after the Russian invasion of the country, many of whom are struggling to complete their education.

    • On Tuesday the United Nations announced that the Russian war in Ukraine has now taken the lives of at least 5,000 civilians, although the UN and other experts agree that the real toll is much higher.
