BEIRUT — Dozens of angry depositors, members of The Cry of the Depositors association, blocked the road in front of Banque du Liban’s Beirut headquarters Thursday, the state-run National News Agency reported.
Here’s what we know:
• The protestors burned tires and threw glass at the BDL building. Security forces and military were deployed at the scene.
• The BDL and its governor, Riad Salameh, have been the subject of anger among many Lebanese and are held partly responsible for the country’s unprecedented economic collapse since 2019.
• The “Forces of Change” parliamentary bloc, made up of 13 MPs, submitted a draft law to Parliament Wednesday that “strengthens the protection of gold reserves at Banque du Liban.”
