BEIRUT — Lebanese Forces’ parliamentary bloc, the Strong Republic, will not participate in the government, announced MP Georges Adwan on Monday on behalf of his bloc, after their meeting with Prime Minister-designate Najib Mikati for the non-binding parliamentary consultations.

Here’s what we know:

    • The head of the Lebanese Forces Samir Geagea had announced on Wednesday that his parliamentary bloc would “not endorse anyone" during the binding parliamentary consultations that took place on Thursday in which a prime minister-designate was elected by members of Parliament.

    • Adwan said Monday that his parliamentary bloc “will not participate in the government because the conditions we are asking for cannot be met, three months before the end of the [president’s] office term.” President Michel Aoun’s office term ends this October.

    • Adwan added that he would support a sovereign government that "restores the decision-making power of the state," indicating that "without a government that has this sovereignty, it is impossible to deal with the economic crisis.”

    • Adwan also said that “there should be no [political] file specific to affiliations, confessions or parties. We cannot reserve a file for this or that group.”

    • Prime Minister-designate Najib Mikati, who was charged with forming a new government on Thursday, began Monday to receive parliamentary blocs and independent deputies, for the scheduled non-binding parliamentary consultations, at the Parliament building in Beirut. These consultations, preliminary to the negotiations for the formation of the cabinet, are expected to continue until Tuesday.
