BEIRUT — A fire broke out around noon Friday, in a structure facing the Fayadieh military academy in the south-east suburbs of Beirut, devastating a green space bordering the road.
Here’s what we know:
• Army soldiers attempted to put out the fire, despite being insufficiently equipped. Civil defense teams and army helicopters arrived at the scene in the early afternoon. Preliminary reports suggest there was no serious damage or casualties as a result of the blaze.
• The incident follows reports of a large fire, which it is suspected was deliberately set, that erupted Tuesday night in Lebanon’s largest pine forest, bordering on the villages of Btormaz and Sfireh in the Denniye region. That conflagration was brought under control the following day.
