BEIRUT — Hezbollah on Tuesday appointed former MP Nawaf al-Mousawi, who resigned from his role in Parliament after a scandal in July 2019, as its representative to communicate with the Lebanese officials regarding the maritime border situation, a Hezbollah spokesperson told L’Orient Today.

Here’s what we know:

    • On Sunday, a floating production, storage and offloading unit from the power company Energean arrived to part of the disputed exclusive economic zone between Israel and Lebanon to begin exploiting the Karish gas field on behalf of the Israeli state, provoking indignant reactions from Lebanese officials.

    • In July 2019, Mousawi was involved in a violent altercation between his daughter and her ex-husband, a stark reminder that Lebanese women face routine discrimination in matters of divorce and child custody. He resigned from his role as an MP shortly after the incident.

    • US State Department spokesman Ned Price said Monday that no visit to Lebanon by US envoy Amos Hochstein, who has been appointed to mediate Lebanon’s maritime border negotiations with Israel, is planned at this time. However, during a Parliament session Tuesday, Speaker Nabih Berri claimed that the envoy is expected in Beirut on "Sunday or Monday."
