ISF arrests six suspected drug dealers in Beirut's southern suburbs

BEIRUT — The Internal Security Forces announced Friday the arrest of six suspected drug dealers in Laylaki and Teero, in Beirut’s southern suburbs, and seized an amount of heroin.

Here’s what we know:

    • In a statement, the ISF said, “as part of a follow-up the security brigade in the southern suburbs is doing to combat drug trade operations and its dealership, the brigade was able to obtain information about someone on board a van selling drugs to dealers in different areas in the southern suburbs, especially in the Laylaki neighborhood and Teero area.”

    • The ISF also said it had been able to detect the van in the Teero area on May 29 and, upon monitoring the area, arrested its driver on Friday as well as five other people involved in drug dealing.

    • The ISF added that it seized 209 heroin packages, an amount of money, three motorcycles and seven mobile phones.

    • According to the ISF, those arrested admitted they were selling and abusing drugs. The ISF added that following their confessions the suspects were referred to the judiciary.

    • Last week, a captagon smuggling attempt through Beirut’s Rafik Hariri International Airport was thwarted and the suspected dealers were arrested. The Interior Ministry under Minister Bassam Mawlawi has pledged to crack down on drug trafficking.
