Parliamentary blocs, names of new MPs sent to Baabda ahead of appointment of next PM

BEIRUT — The General Secretariat of Parliament on Thursday sent the names of the parliamentary blocs and independent MPs to the Presidential Palace in Baabda ahead of parliamentary consultations over the appointment of a new prime minister, after newly re-elected Parliament Speaker Nabih Berri announced that parliamentary committee elections would take place on Tuesday, June 7.

Here’s what we know:

    • A source at the Presidential Palace told L’Orient Today that the presidency was waiting for a list of the names of new MPs in order to be able to formally invite them to Baabda.

    • This meeting is set to take place after the election of the parliamentary committees, scheduled for Tuesday.

    • Once appointed by the President following binding consultations with MPs, the prime minister will then be responsible for forming a government to replace Najib Mikati's outgoing cabinet.

    • This government took 13 months to take shape following Hassan Diab’s resignation in the aftermath of the Aug. 4, 2020, explosion.
