BEIRUT — Dozens of doctors held a sit-in Thursday in front of Banque du Liban’s headquarters in Beirut to protest “the central bank and commercial banks’ policies regarding depositors and specifically hospitals and health sector employees,” the state-run National News Agency reported.

Here’s what we know:

    • The protesters, some of whom were in scrubs, blocked Hamra’s main street while protesting outside BDL.

    • On Monday, the Union of Hospital Owners and the Order of Doctors of Beirut and Tripoli called for a two-day strike on Thursday and Friday and a protest at the BDL headquarters in Hamra to decry difficulties in accessing funds. However, the striking hospitals announced they would continue to treat emergency cases.

    • Hospitals in Koura, Haykal and Bourji announced Thursday they would go on strike for two days in solidarity with the unions’ call, the NNA reported. Hotel Dieu hospital in Achrafieh said that those who “had appointments could come to the hospital but otherwise physicians would not be working until 1 p.m.“ Clemenceau Medical Center, Bahman Hospital and Makassed Hospital were not on strike.
