BEIRUT — Access Center for Human Rights (ACHR), a Lebanon-founded, France-operated NGO, published a report on human rights violations against Syrian refugees in Lebanon Wednesday.

Here’s what we know:

  • ACHR found that 955 Syrians were forcibly evicted in 2021 “mainly due to the economic conditions in Lebanon or problems between the host community and the camp residents.”

   • The report found that 139 individuals were subjected to arbitrary arrest or detention. Fifty-nine individuals were arbitrarily deported, 44 individuals were subjected to “torture and ill-treatment,” and 16 individuals faced enforced disappearance. It is not clear whether a single person can be counted under multiple headings if subjected to multiple human rights violations.

   • In a series of recommendations to the Lebanese government ACHR called on the state to allow people at risk of deportation the right of appeal, to halt arbitrary arrests, to grant human rights organizations access to detention facilities, and to repeal the 2019 decision to deport Syrians who entered Lebanon by informal means.
