Solider fires nine bullets inside Saida hospital

BEIRUT — A Lebanese soldier fired nine bullets inside Labib hospital in Saida, South Lebanon, on Sunday, while his child was being treated there, our correspondent in the region reported.

Here's what we know:

    • Armed with a pistol, the man fired nine bullets inside the hospital while screaming. However, no one was injured in the incident.

    • The shooter had first dropped off his one-and-a-half-year-old son in Sibline hospital in the Chouf, following a fall in which the child head his hit; however, this institution did not have the necessary care to help the child, and so he was transferred to Labib hospital on Saturday night, according to a statement issued by Labib hospital. After a CT scan, the hospital staff decided that the child needed surgery.

    • While the parents were accompanying their child this morning during the scan, the mother fainted and the father became angry, grabbing his gun and opening fire in the hospital's children's ward. The child was later operated on and stabilized, the hospital said.

    • Sources at the hospital told our correspondent that the child was alive and well.

    • The Internal Security Forces have arrested the soldier for the purpose of investigating the circumstances of the incident.
