Ogero officer arrested for allegedly faking kidnapping to embezzle funds

BEIRUT – The Internal Security Forces announced Saturday that the treasurer of a Bekaa branch of state telecommunications provider Ogero was arrested for allegedly attempting to embezzle funds by simulating his own kidnapping.

Here’s what we know:

    • On May 11, the treasurer was supposed to deposit LL51 million (about $1,600 at the parallel market rate) on behalf of Ogero at the central bank when he could no longer be reached. At night, the man contacted his brother to tell him that he had been kidnapped and robbed.

    • The following day, following the ISF’s interrogation, the man reportedly confessed to simulating the kidnapping to cover up the embezzlement of around LL20 million.

    • Ogero employees have previously held strikes to demand wage increases. On Friday, Cabinet approved an increase in Ogero tariffs during its last meeting before assuming caretaker status.
