Alfa and MTC Touch employees hold strike, while telecoms companies face service disruptions amidst central offices breakdown

BEIRUT — More than 50 employees of mobile phone operators in Lebanon, Alfa and MTC Touch, observed a general strike on Friday to demand an improvement in their working conditions.

Here’s what we know:

    • Workers call on officials to “take urgent measures to ensure continuity of work in the sector.” The distribution of charging cards and the bill payments were interrupted as the strike went on.

    • In addition, a breakdown occurred in one of the main central offices in the Corniche al-Nahr in Beirut, resulting in a shutdown of services in the area. Maintenance services have been suspended due to the strike.

    • The Union of Employees of Mobile Phone Companies in Lebanon called for a sit-in in front of the headquarters of the operator Alfa in Furn al-Shubbak at 1 p.m., while the cabinet meets at 2:30 p.m. to discuss an agenda that includes a request to increase telecom tariffs.
