BEIRUT — The leader of the Kataeb party, Samy Gemayel, said Thursday that "everything has changed" in the Lebanese politics post-election, and invited the various forces "of opposition to unify.”

Here’s what we know:

    • "Everything has changed on the political scene, because they [Hezbollah and its allies] have lost the majority and their ability to ally with each other," said Gemayel after a meeting with his party’s newly elected MPs. During the elections, Four Kataeb candidates were elected, in addition to Samy Gemayel (Mount Lebanon II): Nadim Gemayel (Beirut I), Elias Hankache (Mount Lebanon II) and the vice president of the party, Selim Sayegh (Mount Lebanon I ).

    • "Who said nothing would change?... A lot of things have changed and Hezbollah has lost its majority," Gemayel continued.

    • Gemayel also said that his party would have to face "many challenges" and invited "all opposition MPs to unite.”

    • "We will not set any conditions for the unity of an opposition front, except respect for certain principles such as the sovereignty of Lebanon, the refusal of any compromise on the assets of the Lebanese and the demand for decentralization of administration,” he added. At least 13 independent MPs have succeeded in reaching Parliament as a result of Sunday’s vote.
