BEIRUT — Qatar's Ambassador to Lebanon Ibrahim bin Abdel Aziz al-Sahlaoui conveyed to the head of government, “Qatar's congratulations for the success of the legislative elections,” during a meeting at the Grand Serail Thursday with the Prime Minister, Najib Mikati.

Here’s what we know:

    • Qatar hailed the holding of legislative elections in Lebanon and described the election result as “democratic” on Thursday, “Qatar welcomed the electoral operation in Lebanon. We hope that this will lead to a global agreement in order to organize the other electoral deadlines,” said the ambassador.

    • The parliamentary elections l had a low turnout, 41 percent, compared to 49 percent in 2018, which seems to indicate voter apathy, lack of trust in the electoral system, and that traditional parties had difficulty in mobilizing their supporters, at a time when the country is mired in a serious economic crisis since 2019, pushing 80 percent of the population into poverty.
