Death of Sheikh Khalifa: Mikati and Bou Habib in the Emirates to offer their condolences

BEIRUT — Prime Minister Najib Mikati headed a delegation to the United Arab Emirates Saturday to offer condolences for the death of President Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed al Nahyan.

Here’s what we know:

    • Accompanying Mikati are Foreign Minister Abdallah Bou Habib and Lebanese ambassador to Abu Dhabi Fouad Danedane.

    • On Friday, Mikati decreed three days of national mourning in light of Nahyan’s passing at the age of 73 during, which flags will be flown at half-mast on all public buildings, and television and radio programs will have to be modified, although Mikati’s statement did not specify the exact modifications required.

    • Nahyan oversaw his country's meteoric rise on the international scene over the past two decades. Rarely seen in public since a stroke in January 2014. Mohammad bin Zayed, known as “MBZ,” who has long been considered the de facto ruler of the country and has international renown, was unanimously elected president Saturday by the UAE Federal Supreme Council.
