BEIRUT — Ballot boxes were distributed Saturday morning to polling stations throughout Lebanon in preparation for Sunday’s parliamentary elections.
Here’s what we know:
• Local authorities, accompanied by members of security forces, distributed the ballot boxes and began the necessary preparations with polling station officials from as early as 4 a.m. in certain areas, such as Akkar, North Lebanon, according to L’Orient Today’s correspondent in the region.
• The voting begins on Sunday at 7 a.m. in the entirety of Lebanon. It is the first chance Lebanese citizens have gotten to cast their ballots since the Oct. 17, 2019, uprisings, during wich massive demonstrations denounced the ruling class, accusing it of incompetence and corruption. The vote is organized amid a worsening economic crisis that has afflicted the country for almost three years.
• Lebanese expatriates voted in overseas elections on May 6 and 8.
