Interior minister orders nightclubs to shut and bans motorcycles during legislative elections on Sunday

BEIRUT — Interior Minister Bassam Mawlawi on Tuesday issued a decision pertaining to movement and business opening hours around parliamentary elections scheduled for Sunday. The decision includes banning motorcycles across the country.

Here’s what we know:

    • According to the decision, motorcycles are banned as a mode of transportation between 6 a.m. Sunday and 6 a.m. Monday, with limited exceptions. These exceptions apply to “security forces, public administration workers, municipality workers, independent workers, news outlets, journalists and photographers, companies that distribute newspapers and what is known as delivery for restaurants and pharmacies,” the document issued by the minister states.

    • “Security forces, municipal police officers are assigned to implement this decision and must take appropriate measures against people who don’t abide by the decision,” the decision also states.

    • The interior minister also ordered nightclubs to close at 10 p.m. on Saturday and to remain closed throughout Sunday. Bars and restaurants have to close at 11 p.m on Saturday, but can open as usual from 8 a.m. on Sunday.
