BEIRUT — Nearly a ton of narcotics destined for Europe were seized Wednesday at the Port of Beirut by the Internal Security Forces, Interior Minister Bassam Mawlawi said via Twitter.

Here’s what we know:

    • "The drug control office seized 975 kilos of hashish at the Port of Beirut inside boxes of consumer products," Mawlawi tweeted. He indicated that these narcotics were intended for a European country, without specifying which one.

    • Mawlawi also said that "the people involved have been identified and work is underway to arrest them." He also asserted that the security forces "are on the lookout to bring down any trafficking operation.”

    • Last January, Kuwait sent Lebanon an Arab roadmap containing several requests, including a demand to fight drug smuggling. Since then the ISF has been regularly making drug seizures.
