MP Faisal Karami registers electoral list in North Lebanon II

BEIRUT — Sunni MP for Tripoli Faisal Karami who leads the Dignity Movement registered his electoral list on Wednesday under the name “People's Will.” There are just five days remaining before the deadline to register lists at the Interior Ministry for the parliamentary elections scheduled for May 15.

Here’s what we know:

    • There are 10 candidates in this list, running in North Lebanon II constituency, which includes 11 seats. Besides Karami, the candidates are: Taha Naji, Ahmad Amine, Rami Assoum, as well as Rafli Diab, who is supported by the Marada movement led by Sleiman Frangieh. The list also includes Georges Chabtini, Mohammad Traboulsi, Nebras Alameddine and Jihad el-Samad.

    • The 11 seats in the constituency are distributed as follows: eight Sunni seats, one Alawite, one Maronite, one Greek-Orthodox.

    • Two mainstays of the Tripolitan political scene, the Future Movement and Prime Minister Najib Mikati, will not participate in this year’s elections. Former Justice Minister Ashraf Rifi, who strongly opposes Hezbollah, remains along with the Sunnis of March 8, Islamist movements and independent candidates to compete for the seats in Tripoli.
