BEIRUT — President Michel Aoun received Prime Minister Najib Mikati at Baabda Palace Thursday morning, the presidency announced on Twitter. The meeting preceded a visit from Iran's foreign minister.
Here’s what we know:
• No information on the nature of their discussion has been confirmed at this stage, but the meeting was held amidst a tense legal and financial situation in Lebanon as some judges, including Ghada Aoun, who is considered close to the president, have initiated proceedings against several banks as well as the governor of the Banque du Liban, Riad Salameh, interventions which Mikati supports.
• The meeting also took place ahead of a visit by Iranian Foreign Minister Hossein Amir-Abdollahian, who is expected to arrive in Beirut from Damascus today. He is scheduled to meet with President Aoun, Prime Minister Mikati, and Parliamentary Speaker Nabih Berri. It is assumed he will also meet with the leader of Hezbollah which is close to Tehran.
