BEIRUT— President Michel Aoun said on Wednesday that Lebanon needs international aid to cope with its socio-economic crisis, during a meeting with the United Nations Deputy Secretary-General Amina Mohammed in Baabda.
Here’s what we know:
• “Lebanon needs international aid to cope with the economic and social conditions it is going through,” said Aoun.
• Lebanon is going through the worst economic and financial crisis in its contemporary history, characterized by a sharp depreciation of the lira, which lost more than 90 percent of its value in the last two years. More than 75 percent of the Lebanese population now lives below the poverty line.
• On Tuesday, Lebanese Prime Minister Najib Mikati asked Mohammed to help Lebanon preserve its food security. The Russian attacks on Ukraine raised fears over Lebanon’s food security since the Black Sea is the country’s primary market for wheat imports.
