BEIRUT – The syndicate for workers and employees of state-owned power provider Electricité du Liban issued on Tuesday a statement calling for a strike from March 9 to March 15, to protest the “indifference” displayed by authorities towards the union’s demands and their previous “statements and protests,” the state-run National News Agency reported.

Here’s what we know:

    • During the strike, the syndicate asked workers to stage sit-ins and protest from their workplaces, and to “not work under any pretense to avoid nullifying the strike.” The tasks interrupted exclude what would “incur a danger on public safety,” and workers were asked to “consult with the union in the matter of not receiving or depositing [fuel].”

    • The union’s statement said that they are re-emphasizing previous demands, which included wage adjustments, insurance and contract renegotiation, that had not been heard by either the “[Energy] minister, the prime minister or the EDL board of directors.”
