BEIRUT — Electricité du Liban contract workers began an open-ended strike on Thursday to demand an increase in their salaries.

Here’s what we know:

    • During a meeting with Energy Minister Walid Fayad, contract workers called for “social assistance and an increase in their salaries,” according to a statement reported by the state-run National News Agency.

    • “Fayad was in favor of this salary increase but there are some obstacles on the side of EDL," the statement reported by NNA read, noting that the minister “promised that the issue would be resolved at the cabinet meeting scheduled for next Tuesday.”

    • Employees then announced an “open-ended strike in all EDL administrations until the administration responds to our demands.”
