BEIRUT — France, the European Union and the United States called on Thursday for justice to be done in the case of the assassination of the Lokman Slim who was killed exactly a year ago in South Lebanon.
Here’s what we know:
• France's ambassador to Lebanon Anne Grillo said Thursday, during a ceremony organized in memory of Lokman Slim at his family’s home in the southern suburbs of Beirut, that “France will continue to honor his memory and support his work along with all of those who fight against impunity, justice, peace and freedom in Lebanon.”
• For his part, the European Union’s ambassador to Lebanon said that “justice is still not served a year after the murder of Lokman Slim.” He added, “Lebanon needs a stronger judicial system to fight against impunity.”
• Spokesperson for the American State Department Ned Price also tweeted on the one year anniversary of Slim’s assassination, saying, “the first anniversary of the assassination of activist Lokman Slim is a solemn reminder of the need for accountability in Lebanon.” He added, “Justice and a transparent investigation into this murder and others are long overdue.”
• Slim, a Shiite researcher, editor and filmmaker who was fierce critic of Hezbollah, was kidnapped and murdered a year ago in South Lebanon. Slim had been threatened several times by Hezbollah and the Amal Movement. He had also, prior to his death, said these parties would be responsible for anything that might happen to him.
