BEIRUT — A landmine detonated on the outskirts of the South Lebanon town of Aita al-Shaab on Saturday, seriously injuring a man who was collecting firewood at the time, the state-run National News Agency reported.
Here’s what we know:
• The injured man was transferred to Salah Ghandour Hospital in Bint Jbeil for treatment, where it was reported that one of his feet was amputated, the NNA added.
• A similar incident was reported at the opposite end of the country on Thursday, when a man was seriously injured in the leg by the explosion of a mine in Akkar, on the border with Syria.
• The explosion of mines scattered in the north and south of Lebanon at the end of successive wars in recent decades continues to claim victims in the country. De-mining operations by UN teams and the Lebanese Army have eliminated many of the devices, but some remain.
