Lebanese University maintenance workers announce open-ended strike

BEIRUT — Lebanese University maintenance workers announced Tuesday that they will go on an open strike starting tomorrow to demand better pay.

Here’s what we know:

    • In a statement, the workers said that they would strike “until all our demands are met, with the most important one being better salaries that are adequate [to compensate for] the deteriorating social conditions.”

    • Workers of all sectors including teachers, security forces and office workers are struggling to cope with an unprecedented economic crisis. Salaries have remained largely stagnant since the crisis took hold in late 2019, and the local currency has continued to lose value against the US dollar, trading this morning at LL3200 on the parallel market.
