BEIRUT — The Lebanese NGO Amel Association International announced that a COVID-19 vaccination campaign it ran in Syrian refugee camps in Lebanon from June to December 2021 in coordination with the UN refugee agency and the Ministry of Public Health had been able to get 15,500 people vaccinated, the NNA reports.

Here's what we know:

    • As of Saturday, the Health Ministry reported that about than 2.45 million people in Lebanon have received a first dose of the COVID-19 vaccine. The ministry reports do not show the number of Lebanese versus non-Lebanese recipients.

    • While health officials have said that as much of the population as possible should be vaccinated, regardless of nationality or immigration status, some refugees and migrant workers have reported being turned away by hospitals when they attempted to get the vaccine due to being unable to present valid residency documents.

    • The Amel Association said in a statement that its vaccination campaign in the camps was intended to "limit the spread of the Covid-19 pandemic, protect the most vulnerable groups in Lebanon, and ensure equitable access to health, especially in light of the crises the country is going through, as well as the deteriorating economic and social situation."

    •  Meanwhile, the Ministry of Public Health continued the second day of a weekend "vaccine marathon" on Sunday at sites around the country. At the end of the marathon's first day Saturday, Health Minister Firass Abiad tweeted that more than 30,500 people had received a dose.
