BEIRUT – The Energy Ministry announced on Monday that repairs to the Arab Gas Pipeline by the Technical Company for Gas Pipeline Operation Services will begin tomorrow.
Here’s what we know:
• The completion of this work would pave the way for the Egyptian gas deal with Lebanon, which would help boost Lebanon’s ability to generate electricity amid major shortages in the country.
• The pipeline, which was built around 20 years ago, is reportedly in disrepair, especially in sections that run through Syria, which were damaged during the conflict there.
• The project is part of a US initiative announced during the summer by the US Ambassador to Lebanon Dorothy Shea. Implementation of the program would require the US to waive sanctions imposed on Syria under the Caesar Act.
