CRISIS IN MARJAYOUN

Residents of Marjayoun are enduring telecommunications disruption, a COVID-19 outbreak and a cut in generator-provided electricity

BEIRUT— Residents of Marjayoun are currently suffering from a number of crises, and feel that they “live in a stricken area,” according to the state-run National News Agency.

Here’s what we know:

    • Marjayoun is experiencing an outbreak of COVID-19, with case numbers climbing higher every day, the NNA reports.

    • Lightning from the storm that hit Lebanon this week has caused some of Ogero’s telephone lines to cut off, and residents say they face constant service interruptions from cellular providers Touch and Alfa.

    • In addition, the area is experiencing frequent losses of power, as some private generator owners have decreased the number of hours of electricity they provide per day, blaming the high price of diesel and locals’ inability to pay high subscription bills. Many local businesses are currently trying to operate in the dark.
