BEIRUT – A retired soldier who set himself on fire on Monday in the Bekaa village of Bednayel to protest living conditions in the country succumbed to his wounds today, the NNA reports.
Here's what we know:
• The deceased, M.H.S., was in his 60s and married without children, according to our correspondent in the Bekaa.
• He poured gasoline on himself and set himself on fire three days ago in front of his house near the Bednayel village square. He was subsequently hospitalized before eventually succumbing to his wounds today.
• Lebanon has seen a number of self-immolations in recent months, as desperate citizens confront the country’s worst social and economic crisis since the civil war. Despite these dramatic protest acts, the government remains mired in a cycle of finger-pointing and inaction.
