BEIRUT — More than 14 metal manhole covers along a sewage channel in Akkar were found to have been stolen Friday, L’Orient Today’s correspondent in the region reported.

Here’s what we know:

    • All the thefts occurred along the main road between the villages of Deir Daloum and Majdala in Akkar.

    • Residents of villages along the route reacted by using car tires to block the exposed holes and warn motorists using their road of their presence.

    • The residents also called on the security forces to quickly arrest those responsible for the theft and return the manhole covers.

    • Metal theft has become common of late in Lebanon due to its high resale value amid an economic crisis that has seen the national currency lose more than 90 percent of its value against the US dollar.
