Officials in Qobeiyat area of Akkar call for stricter implementation of preventative measures as coronavirus cases rise, school closes

BEIRUT – Qobeiyat officials Tuesday called for stricter application of COVID-19 preventative measures following the nearby Mashha school’s decision to close after five of its teachers tested positive for the coronavirus, L’Orient Today’s correspondent in the area reported.

Here’s what we know:

    • The Qobeiyat crisis cell responsible for managing the coronavirus spread in the area has asked shop owners to “be aware of the current situation ahead of the upcoming holiday season” and has said that it will provide free COVID-19 tests for schools and individuals in need.

    • The mayor of Akkar has asked municipalities across the district to apply “stricker COVID-19 measures to prevent the risk of the virus spreading.”

    • Case numbers in the Akkar district have risen over the past two weeks, reaching 365 active cases on Monday after 30 more residents tested positive.
