ECONOMIC CRISIS

Man attempts to set himself alight outside Hasbaya school

BEIRUT — A man attempted to set himself on fire outside at the public girls’ school in Hasbaya on Thursday as he denounced a decision taken by the Education Minister Abbas Halabi to close secondary cycle classes, Al Nahar-reports.

Here’s what we know:

    • A video published on the newspaper’s website showed the man with a can of gasoline in his hand trying to spray himself with fuel to immolate himself before passersby intervened to prevent him from doing so.

    • Taken by anger, the man screamed that “politics have ruined the country,” and that he “no longer wants to send his kids to school” but “wants to start selling chewing gum,” an activity widespread among street beggars in Lebanon

    • With the start of the school year, many parents are struggling to pay their children’s tuition fees due to the socio-economic crisis in the country, as most salaries have not risen in tandem with soaring prices as the lira continues to depreciate.

    • People’s mental health has been driven to the edge in the past year due to the economic crisis which has plunged 78 percent of the population into poverty.

    • Even before the economic crisis truly started to be felt in 2019, a similar self-immolation incident took place as a man set himself on fire in front of a school in Koura as he could no longer pay for his children’s fees.
