Firefighters extinguish overnight blaze at Beddawi oil refinery

BEIRUT — A fire broke out on overnight from Tuesday to Wednesday in a reservoir at the Beddawi oil refinery north of Tripoli. Civil Defense teams worked for five hours to bring the blaze under control, L’Orient Today’s correspondent in the area reports.

Here’s what we know:

    • According to our correspondent, the fire broke out at midnight and the firefighters started working to control it at 12:30 a.m; they succeeded in bringing it under control at 5:30 a.m. 

    • Speaking to L’Orient Today, a spokesperson from the Lebanese Red Cross said that the organization had mobilized its ambulances in the area but did not end up using them as no one was injured by the blaze.

    • Thus far there has been no statement from the Civil Defense, the oil refinery’s directors or the Energy Ministry explaining the cause of the fire.

    • Last month, a similar incident occurred at the Zahrani oil facility in southern Lebanon.
