Lebanese leaders condemn drone attack against Iraqi PM

BEIRUT — Lebanon’s top officials condemned the early Sunday drone attack against Iraqi Prime Minister Mustafa al-Kadhimi, which left the Iraqi leader unscathed amid heightening tensions in the country.

Here’s what we know:

    • President Michel Aoun denounced the apparent assassination bid, in which an explosive-laden drone struck Kadhimi’s residence in Baghdad’s Green Zone. Two other drones were shot down.

    • Lebanon’s president said in a statement that the attack targeted “not only Kadhimi, but also the stability and security of Iraqi.”

    • Premier Najib Mikati called his Iraqi counterpart and wished him well, Lebanon’s National News Agency reported, adding that the Lebanese PM voiced his wishes that “brotherly Iraq” would have security and stability.

    • Meanwhile, Parliament Speaker Nabih Berri also called Kadhimi, according to a statement, hailing the Iraqi leader for surviving the drone attack, which injured at least six security personnel.
