Funerals take place for the victims of yesterday’s deadly clashes

BEIRUT — The funerals of the victims of Thursday’s violent clashes in Beirut’s Tayyouneh area took place throughout the day Friday with hundreds of mourners from Hezbollah and Amal in attendance.

Here’s what we know:

    • Hassan Mohammad Subhi Mashik, one of the three victims named by Amal along with Mustafa Munir Zbeeb and Hassan Jamil Nehmeh, was buried in the early afternoon in South Lebanon. At the time of the funeral procession heavy gunfire resounded from the direction of Beirut’s Tayyouneh area, local media outlets reported. Local media outlets also reported that Zbeeb and Nehmeh were buried Friday.

    • The victims named by Hezbollah include party members Mohammad Hassan al-Sayed and Ali Bassam Ibrahim, and Tayyouneh resident and mother of five Maryam Mohammad Farhat. They were buried in a collective funeral in Ghobeiri in Beirut, our sister publication L’Orient-Le Jour reported.

    • The death toll in the conflict rose to seven after Mohamad Tamer passed away at Bahman Hospital on Friday morning. According to the Hezbollah affiliated television station Al-Manar, his funeral took place on Friday afternoon in Koura, North Lebanon.

    • Thursday’s deadly clashes erupted at Tayyouneh as hundreds of Hezbollah and Amal supporters headed to the Justice Palace to protest Judge Tarek Bitar’s alleged "politicization" of the Beirut port explosion investigation. In addition to the seven killed, the incident left more than 30 people injured.
