BEIRUT — The American University of Beirut Medical Center issued a statement Saturday warning that if it does not receive diesel by Monday to keep its generators running, patients at the hospital will die.

Here's what we know:

    • AUB Medical Center says it will run out of electricity on Monday morning, causing 40 adults and 15 children on respirators to die immediately unless authorities enable it to acquire diesel for its generators.

    • A further 180 people receiving dialysis treatment could die within days of a power shutdown.

    • Hundreds of cancer patients could be impacted, heightening their risk of death.

    • In its statement, the university said it held the Lebanese government and officials in the Lebanese state “fully responsible for this crisis.”

    • In an email to students yesterday, the university security force said it would be patrolling campus to ensure “all unnecessary lights and split units are turned off.”
