BEIRUT — Two members of the Jundallah Islamist group were killed in Tripoli on Saturday evening in an apparent settling of scores, our sister publication L’Orient-Le Jour reports.
Here’s what we know:
• Unknown assailants on motorbikes opened fire on Amer Merhab and Talal Omran on Saturday night in Tripoli’s Qibbeh neighborhood, killing both.
• Both Merhab and Omran were members of the Jundallah Islamist group, led by Salafi Sheikh Kanaan Naji.
• Amid high tensions and sporadic gunfire, a meeting was convened at Naji’s house; security forces also deployed.
• An investigation is underway to determine those responsible and their motive.
• Funerals for the victims were held Sunday morning, amid a large security presence.
