Born in Mashhad in 1969, Mojtaba Khamenei was appointed on Sunday, March 8, 2026, as the new Iranian Supreme Leader, following in the footsteps of his father, Ali Khamenei, who was assassinated on the first day of the U.S.-Israeli offensive on Feb. 28. His name reportedly emerged clearly as the leading candidate during two opaque deliberation sessions held on Tuesday, March 3, by the Assembly of Experts — the body composed of 88 Shiite clerics elected for eight-year terms and responsible for appointing the country’s highest authority.
