The Iranian army warned Saturday that all U.S. bases and interests in the Middle East would be targeted if Washington ‘‘makes a mistake’’ against Iran, according to the semi-official Mehr news agency.
The warning, attributed to the Khatam al-Anbiya Central Headquarters, Iran’s main military operational command, comes as Tehran awaits a U.S. response to its seven-day plan to reopen the Strait of Hormuz, submitted on the sidelines of the U.N. General Assembly this week.
Mehr reported that the region is at ‘‘one of the most sensitive security junctures,’’ with U.S. military movements raising the risk of a new escalation while political channels and mediation efforts remain active.
Summarizing what it described as Tehran’s message, the agency said: ‘‘Iran will not start a war, but if the enemy imposes one, it is ready to defend its security and territorial integrity.’’
