BEIRUT — Attorney General at the Court of Cassation Rami al-Hajj issued a summons warrant Monday for three suspects in connection with the Hezbollah weapons cache seized last week in Ras al-Nabeh, a residential neighborhood in Beirut, a senior judicial source confirmed to L’Orient-Le Jour on Tuesday.
The warrant was issued after the three suspects failed to respond to previous summonses. If they cannot be located, the source said, a search warrant will be issued.
H.J., whose home contained the weapons, remains in custody, according to the source. During questioning, he reportedly identified the three suspects, who are allegedly linked to the presence of the weapons in his apartment, according to local media.
Security forces discovered the arsenal while searching the apartment following a family dispute. The cache included 15 Kalashnikov assault rifles, B7 rockets, ammunition of various calibers and other equipment.
A local source told our newsroom last week that H.J. had “never carried a weapon in his life” and, although he “supported Hezbollah,” was “neither trained nor experienced.” The source suggested the group may have stored weapons at his home precisely because he did not arouse suspicion.
Investigators also found a map of the Ras al-Nabeh district and communications equipment.
The nature of the weapons and equipment has led some observers to suggest that Hezbollah may not be ruling out the use of force in Beirut. The case comes as tensions between Hezbollah and President Joseph Aoun’s government have intensified since last month’s framework agreement between Lebanon and Israel.
Some have drawn parallels with May 7, 2008, when Hezbollah took up arms in Beirut following a government decision targeting its telecommunications network.
So far, however, Hezbollah has refrained from any large-scale mobilization and has remained part of the government. Sources contacted by L’Orient-Le Jour could not confirm the theory that the weapons cache was intended as a show of force, stressing that the investigation remains ongoing.
