Mourners in Tehran call for “revenge” at Khamenei’s funeral
As dawn broke over Tehran on Saturday, crowds gathered around the coffin of assassinated Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, calling for “revenge” during a public farewell.
Iranian state television announced shortly after 6 a.m. local time that national funeral ceremonies had begun at the Mosalla complex, which includes a mosque.
“We are not here for a funeral, but for revenge,” a eulogist shouted to mourners, many of whom were in tears. The crowd waved red flags bearing the word “Martyr” and yellow Hezbollah flags.
Many attendees appeared to be conservative supporters, including women wearing chadors and men dressed in black. Some families attended with their children.
“I never had the chance to see the Supreme Leader up close, and I regret that. Today I came to bid him a final farewell,” Javad Akbari, a 43-year-old food industry employee, told AFP.
The coffin was displayed beneath the dome of the sprawling Mosalla prayer complex, flanked by rows of Iranian flags. Large portraits of Khamenei from different periods of his life, including during the 1980-88 Iran-Iraq War, lined the walls.
