BEIRUT — Egyptian Foreign Minister Badr Abdelatty said during a meeting with Parliament Speaker Nabih Berri in Ain al-Tineh that a complete Israeli withdrawal is essential to stability in Lebanon. He also reaffirmed Egypt’s commitment to Lebanon’s stability.

Berri, for his part, stressed the need to “avoid discord” and to intensify efforts to preserve stability and civil peace.

Over the weekend, Hezbollah and its Shiite ally, the Amal movement led by Berri, reiterated their outright rejection of the framework agreement signed Friday by Lebanese and Israeli representatives under U.S. auspices. The agreement establishes a cease-fire during which Israel would withdraw from designated “pilot zones” where the Lebanese Army would deploy and take responsibility for dismantling Hezbollah's military infrastructure.

The agreement has deepened political divisions between those who see it as a path towards lasting peace, and those who argue it requires Lebanon to make unacceptable concessions on sovereignty in favor of Israel.
