The prosecutor at the Court of Cassation has begun gathering information from General Security following media reports about alleged forged passports, a judicial source told L’Orient-Le Jour on Wednesday.
As part of the process, the prosecutor summoned several General Security officers to obtain information about the procedures and mechanisms used to issue passports.
In recent months, several rumors and allegations have circulated in Lebanon about foreign nationals obtaining Lebanese passports with forged documents or through allegedly irregular procedures.
The Directorate General of General Security previously issued a statement denying the accusations, assuring that biometric passports are issued according to strict security protocols that make forgery extremely difficult.
However, General Security acknowledged that cases of fraud had been detected in the past involving the submission of forged civil status documents or false personal data, but not the forgery of the biometric passport itself.
