Pakistan's interior minister, whose country is mediating between Iran and the United States, arrived in Iran on Saturday as part of diplomatic efforts following the postponement of talks in Switzerland, according to Iranian media.
"The Pakistani interior minister [Mohsin Naqvi] will arrive in Iran today, Saturday, at noon, as part of Pakistan's efforts toward Iran-U.S. negotiations," the Isna news agency wrote, quoting Iranian foreign ministry spokesman Esmail Baghai.
Several local media outlets, including the Tasnim news agency, later specified that Naqvi had landed in Mashhad, in northeastern Iran. According to Isna, the Pakistani interior minister is scheduled to meet his Iranian counterpart, Eskandar Momeni, as well as the foreign minister, Abbas Araghchi.
This visit comes a day after the postponement of discussions between Tehran and Washington that were initially set to take place in Switzerland on Friday following an agreement between the two rival countries.
Iran and the United States signed a memorandum of understanding on Wednesday, brokered by Pakistan, aiming to end three months of war in the Middle East triggered by Israeli-American strikes on Tehran. The document paves the way for a 60-day period of talks focused on Iran's nuclear program and the lifting of sanctions against Iran, with a view to a final agreement.
