Remembering Ameen Rihani, author of ‘The Heart of Lebanon’ and ‘The Kings of Arabia’

From Fraikeh to New York, he had a remarkable journey. A pioneer of Arabic literature in English and a leading reformist thinker of the Arab world, the Lebanese author, essayist, poet, and playwright would have turned 150 this year.

This year, the Ameen Rihani Foundation — which preserves the spelling chosen by the writer himself for his English-language publications — is marking the 150th anniversary of the birth of the Lebanese author and essayist, one of the first Arab writers to write directly in English.To commemorate the occasion, the foundation has partnered with the Friends of the Ameen Rihani Museum in Fraikeh, in the Metn district, to organize a series of cultural events dedicated to his legacy. The program will unfold over several months in Lebanon, beginning on July 11.The initiative was announced by the organizing committee during a press conference held in the museum’s gardens. The museum was established by the author’s nephews, Amine-Albert and Sarmad Rihani, within the walls of the family’s 19th-century home, where he was born in 1876. Flashback...
