BEIRUT — President Joseph Aoun on Wednesday condemned Iranian attacks on Kuwait and Bahrain and called for de-escalation in the region following overnight attacks between the United States and Iran.
The head of state condemned the attacks on civilian targets in Kuwait and Bahrain, including Kuwait airport. Denouncing what he described as a violation of the sovereignty of the two Gulf countries, Aoun called for de-escalation and urged efforts to spare the region from the consequences of the attacks.
The U.S. military said Tuesday night that it had repelled several Iranian missile and drone attacks targeting its bases and allies in the region and responded by bombing Iran's Qeshm Island. Following the attacks, Kuwait airport was closed.
The Revolutionary Guards, the ideological army of the Islamic Republic, said they had targeted infrastructure used by the U.S. military in Bahrain and also claimed responsibility for the attack on Kuwait.
The U.S. and Iran had reached a fragile cease-fire in April, but negotiations for a long-term deal have continued to stall.
