The leader of the Kataeb party, Samy Gemayel, said Thursday, following a meeting with Prime Minister Nawaf Salam, that “no one can stop the process of restoring the sovereignty of the state.” In this context, he expressed his party’s support for the government in the face of repeated threats to topple it.
“No one can stop the process of restoring the sovereignty of the state. Threats and accusations of treason are useless. They only strengthen the determination to continue the work to restore the authority of the state and bring hope for a better future to all Lebanese,” he said from the Grand Serail, according to the state-run National News Agency.
The Kataeb MP, who discussed political developments with the prime minister, was referring to threats regularly issued by Hezbollah officials against Lebanese authorities engaged in a difficult process of disarming the militia, while the Israeli army has continued bombing southern Lebanon since March 2. “The people have the right to bring down the government,” Hezbollah Secretary-General Naim Qassem said on May 24, refusing to hand over the group’s arsenal and escalating rhetoric against authorities increasingly determined to establish a state monopoly on arms and continue negotiations with Israel.
According to the Health Ministry, Israeli strikes killed 3,269 people in Lebanon between March 2 and May 27 and wounded 9,840 others.
