‘Abu Omar’ and Sheikh Oraymet referred to the criminal court

The decision was not unanimous among the members of the Beirut Indictment Chamber, as its president, Kamal Nassar, issued a dissenting opinion.

The Beirut Indictment Chamber, headed by Kamal Nassar, and composed of Roland Chartouni and Marie-Christine Eid, issued an indictment on Tuesday in the “Abu Omar” case. The court thus indicted Moustapha Hessiane — alias Abu Omar — a mechanic from Akkar (Northern Lebanon) who had posed to politicians and businessmen as a Saudi emir capable of securing support from Saudi Arabia in exchange for payments. The court also implicated a Sunni sheikh, Khaldoun Oraymet, who is suspected of having played a key role in facilitating contact between these figures and “Abu Omar.”The two men were brought before the Beirut Criminal Court under Article 288 of the Penal Code, which punishes individuals with imprisonment for acts that “expose Lebanon to the danger of hostile acts,” thereby “disrupts its relations with a foreign state,” which is Saudi Arabia...
