BEIRUT — Lebanese Army Commander Gen. Rodolph Haykal and the head of the cease-fire monitoring committee (the “Mechanism”), U.S. Gen. Joseph Clearfield, held an “exceptional meeting” at Beirut Air Base on Saturday, the army said.

“The meeting followed a brief visit by Gen. Clearfield and focused on the security situation in Lebanon, regional developments, as well as ways to strengthen the Mechanism’s role and further develop its work,” the statement said.

It also stressed “the importance of the army’s role and the need to support it during the current phase.” Gen. Clearfield left Lebanon after the meeting.

This comes amid a fragile cease-fire negotiated by the United States between Hezbollah and Israel to end the large-scale war that erupted on March 2. Despite the agreement, Israel continues to carry out daily strikes on Lebanon, while Hezbollah continues to target Israeli soldiers and equipment in southern Lebanon.
